For ages a girl child has been considered a curse in the Indian society. Despite the fact that India is the home of nearly 120 crore people, a girl child is rarely welcomed in the conventional Indian society. Across India thousands of mother have to abort their fetus if it is a female. But now the practice of female feticide may not be as easy as it has been for long. A new proposed law would make it mandatory for all pregnant women to get their pregnancy registered and due permission from the concerned authorities would be required if they want to abort.
In India ban on sex determination came to existence in 1994, although the practice has been controlled to some extent but still it has not been wiped out completely from the country. As last month, AK Singh from Gurgaon, Haryana, who posed himself as a doctor was caught for carrying out illegal abortions of female fetuses and was then flushing them down the drain.
To keep a check on the practice, Women & Child Development minister Renuka Chowdhury has come up with this new proposal. And it is being considered that the move would stop abortion of unwanted female fetuses. Renuka believes that by this proposal government will be able to keep a track of the pregnancies and will also be cracking down on practice of foeticide.
One school of thought also believes that proposal may violate one’s right of personal freedom and could also be misused.
Whatever is the case but if the proposal becomes a reality then thousands of girl child would not murdered long before they come to this world.
