Come summers and the markets are flooded with mangoes of different shapes and sizes. However, this season the news for mango lovers is not good as the mango production, in one of the largest mango producing states of India, Maharashtra, is likely to go down by as much as 50 per cent. The reason being inclement weather conditions like the unseasonal rain, strong winds and the crop infection in the area all this eventually spoiled the production to a great extent. On an average every year the state exports about 35,000 metric tonnes but with the lesser production this year it will be able to export only 15,000 to 18,000 metric tonnes.
The story for Andhra Pradesh is also the same. Here too untimely rains and squall have taken its toll on the mango crop and as a result the mango production in the state would be down by 35 per cent.
As a result of this destruction mango lovers have to sell out more to lay hands for their favorite fruit, because the price of the best mango, Alfonso, can rise up to Rs700 per kg. Whereas last year it was just Rs 350. But this time it seems that only the affluent would be able to enjoy. The low production would also affect the country’s economy - consumers should be ready to have a big hole in their pockets if the want to enjoy juicy and delicious mangoes this season.
