Earlier it was the grandeur of Taj Mahal in Agra that was in danger due to the ever-increasing pollution. But now it seems that if nothing is done on time then the beauty of the majestic Golden Temple, Amritsar, would be severely affected. The reason: the unprecedented rise in the air pollution around the monument. There are visible marks, which point out that the 24-carat gold which covers the sanctum sanatorium’s roof is showing the signs of withering.
Constructed in 1601 and the place is sacred for not only Sikhs but people from the various walks of life flock here to seek the all mighty blessings. However, a visit to the temple is considered holy and auspicious in Sikhism and all the believers make it a resolution to visit the place at least once in their lifetime.
Nitrogen Oxide, one of the most contaminated materials in the air, is effecting gurudwara. Though Nitrogen Oxide level should be 28 microgram per cubic meter, whereas it has gone above 30 micrograms, which is posing a serious threat. As a result the golden roof is turning into copper shade. The vehicular, industrial and hotels’ waste is also increasing the level of Nitrogen Oxide level in the city.
The Pollution Control Board of India and authorities have woken up to the threat and they are taking all the preventive measures that will help in reducing the pollution around the holy place. There is a plan to plant nearly 1000 saplings that would increase the green cover and vehicular pollution level will also be checked.
The threat to Golden Temple has once highlighted the need to draft a plan that will keep the magnificence of many such monuments intact.
