Shattered by her husband death, who died of AIDS, Pooja Thakur, a young woman has started India’s first condom bar. The first of its kind this bar-cum-discotheque has just opened in Chandigarh.
The object of the bar is to spread awareness amongst youth about safe sex and encourage the use of condom and for the same its walls are dotted with real condoms. As a matter of fact here condoms can be procured free of cost. Souvenirs like cups, T-shirts and caps highlighting the use of condoms and safe sex, are also available. The bar has been set up in association with semi-government Chandigarh Industrial & Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO).
Pooja Thakur, who has turned an AIDS activist said:
I am so happy that CITCO has taken the initiative to create awareness among people, especially youngsters, regarding HIV and AIDS. There is nothing like safe sex. The attitude of people regarding towards AIDS patients has changed. That’s why I am here inaugurating this bar. Had this situation been there earlier, even my husband would have got some treatment for the disease.
In fact Pooja herself has AIDS and one of son is also HIV positive.
CITCO managing director Jasbir Singh Bir said:
We at CITCO thought that this was one social cause we could associate with.
Located at the Kalagram complex on the busy Chandigarh-Panchkula highway, it would be interesting to watch that how youth would respond to this unique initiative.
