Now it is becoming clear that India and America are all set to forget the acrimonious of Cold War. In one more pact between India and America the Indian Air Force would be acquiring Hercules, the famed American transport aircraft, for its fleet. As a matter of fact, this is the largest deal ever signed by any country to acquire so many Hercules.
Air Marshal VK Bhatia, former IAF commander, said:
The Russians have started providing defence equipment at global prices. Now the special relationship, which was there, that scenario, is no longer there so now let the best man win.
Hercules is manufactured by Lockheed Martin. Hercules is a four-engine turboprop cargo and transport aircraft. It is mainly used to move soldiers and heavy weaponry from one place to another. Over the years it has proved as a main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide. There are about 40 models Hercules, which suit various needs. More than 50 nations have Hercules in their defence force. Even Pakistan Air Force has these aircraft in its fleet.
This deal is also significant, as it would clear the way for F-16 fighter planes sale to India. The cost of one Hercules aircraft is nearly $66.5 million.
